hi guys just wondering what your thoughts are about blogging, both as a form of assessment and just in general. Do you think that it is connecting people or is it making people lose face to face contact and withdrawing from the society in which they live. Do you think that people are actually interested in the blogs that people post, or is it only a small minority and the rest of the people only read it as a time waste. What about security and privacy in relation to blogs? When is the line crossed between sharing and over sharing, what should be put up and what is a definate no no.
Also related to this is the freedom of speech, so should you be able to discuss such topics as racism or comments that to some would cross the line, such as Pauline Hanson style.
Similar topic but not entirely the same is that of video postings, such as on the well known youtube or metacafe. It has come to the stage where there are political messages on these sites, there are images that are definately dubious in content due to nudtiy, alcohol induced behaviour, jackass type stunts and racism. Yet it is also a good way to remind ourselves of our childhood by looking up such programs as superted and bananaman or looking up current news events.
So i know this is a bit of a short blog but just wondering what were your thoughts about this blog and the video posting sights :)

Interesting discussion posting! I personally really dislike blogging as I do think it takes away from social contact that we could otherwise be engaging in. I know that we are assessed on "online engagement" but I think that this is so different to having a healthy social life and isn't really something that should be encouraged.
In come clinical settings, through observation, we assess a person's body language and how they are able to socially interact. If they were encouraged when they were younger that social interaction could be done through a computer, the social skils for face to face contact would be minimal.
I guess it's a but different for us seeing as we are a bit older, though I think society today is downplaying the need for social contact.
While i did really well in the first blog, and I definately think that blogging has it's place, though I don't think that it is an effective form of asssessment in tertiary settings. Partly because people who are computer literate have a huge advantage over people who do not have these talents, and partly because I almost had to complete a computer course to be able to complete the assessment!
However I do think that James has done an excellent job in dedicating his time to people in need with computer requirements!
I apologise for my rambling. Thins is a really good posting Bre and it will be interesting to hear the thoughts of others in the unit!
Thanks for opening up this topic/issue Bre. I'm glad to see Carla's views and would be happy to see others who aren't in favour of a blogging exercise to help me understand how it could be improved.
One thing I am pretty sure I would definitely change in figure is having an additional tutorial at the start to help people get over the initial technical set-up.
The other comment I have is that rather traditional-style f2f vs. online, I'm really interested in how perhaps we can get the best of both worlds in the process of studying social psychology.
